Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlays Need Application-Driven Benchmarks

چکیده
Considerable research effort has recently been devoted to the design of structured peer-to-peer overlays, a term we use to encompass Content-Addressable Networks (CANs), Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs), and Decentralized Object Location and Routing networks (DOLRs). These systems share the property that they consistently map a large space of identifiers to a set of nodes in a network, and while at first sight they provide very similar services, they nonetheless embody a wide variety of design alternatives. We present the case for developing application-driven benchmarks for such overlays, give a model of the services they provide applications, describe and present the results of two preliminary benchmarks, and discuss the implications of our tests for application writers. We are unaware of other empirical comparative

Generic Emergent Overlays in Arbitrary Peer Identifier Spaces
Unstructured overlay networks are driven by simple protocols that are easy to analyze and implement. The lack of structure, however, leads to weak message delivery guarantees and poor scaling. Structured overlays impose a global overlay topology that is then maintained by all peers in a complex protocol. In contrast to unstructured approaches the structured overlays are efficient and scalable, ...
متن کاملExploiting Routing Redundancy via Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlays
Structured peer-to-peer overlays provide a natural infrastructure for resilient routing via efficient fault detection and precomputation of backup paths. These overlays can respond to faults in a few hundred milliseconds by rapidly shifting between alternate routes. In this paper, we present two adaptive mechanisms for structured overlays and illustrate their operation in the context of Tapestr...
متن کاملPeer-to-peer overlays: structured, unstructured, or both?
We compare structured and unstructured overlays and derive a hybrid overlay that can outperform both. Unstructured overlays build a random graph and use flooding or random walks on that graph to discover data stored by overlay nodes. Structured overlays assign keys to data items and build a graph that maps each key to the node that stores the corresponding data. Unstructured overlays are widely...
متن کاملP2P MANET's - New Research Issues
1. What are P2P MANETs? A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of mobile nodes that dynamically self organize in a wireless network without using any pre-existing infrastructure. In a MANET, the applications are typically “peer-to-peer” rather than “client-server”. Moreover, a MANET is often built to support a specific application, thus the networking is application-driven. For these r...
